Visiting Pena Palace
Ways to explore: Walk the park solo, roam the palace at your own pace, plug in an audio guide, or let a guide do the storytelling while you just... look up in awe.
Guided value: Ferdinand II packed this palace with symbolism, obsession, and architectural chaos in the best way. Without a guide, you'll admire the colours. With one, you'll actually understand what you're looking at. Guided tours come in standard and thematic options, in English and Portuguese.
Combos worth it:Quinta da Regaleira + Pena Palace is a genuinely great Sintra double bill. Or stack it with the Moorish Castle for views that'll wreck your camera roll.
Queues & access: Skip-the-line means you skip the ticket queue, not the security check. In peak summer, that queue alone can swallow 30 to 60 minutes of your day. Book ahead and skip the suffering.
When to book: Slots disappear 1 to 2 weeks out in summer. Don't leave it to the morning and hope for the best.
Good to know: The park opens at 9am; the palace itself lets you in at 9:30am. Last entry is 6pm. Closed Christmas and New Year's Day.
Best upgrade: Actors, not guides, bring Queen Amélia's court to life on the thematic guided tour, and it's the best way to access the royal apartments. Slots are tiny, they sell out fast, and there's nothing else like it on the estate.

Things to know before booking your Pena Palace tickets
Booking window
Here's the thing about Pena Palace: everyone wants to go, and only 275 people get in per 30-minute slot. In summer, those slots vanish weeks out.
You can buy Pena Palace tickets at the door, but you'll spend 45–60 minutes in the sun finding out whether any are left.
Save yourself the anxiety: book your Pena Palace tickets online at least 1 to 2 weeks ahead, earlier if you're visiting June through September.
Entry & routing
Skip-the-line (what you're actually paying for): A staff member meets you at the designated meeting point outside the palace store and walks you past the regular queue directly into the visit circuit.
Miss that meeting point and your priority access is gone, as there's no grace period.
Standard timed entry gets the same slot, just without the escort and fast-track access.
Park ticket vs. palace ticket (don't mix these up)
A Pena Park ticket covers the 200-hectare grounds: royal kitchen, gardens, exotic trees, and the Cruz Alta viewpoint. It does not get you inside the palace.
For the royal rooms, the Arab Room, and Queen Amélia's apartments, you need the Palace + Park ticket.
Ways to explore
The audio guide (English, Spanish, French, Portuguese) is the smart self-paced option. You set the speed, you linger where you want.
Standard Pena Palace guided tours are small-group and built around the palace's key architectural and historical moments.
Want something genuinely unlike anything else? The thematic guided tour is actor-led, centres on Queen Amélia's life, and unlocks access to her private apartments.
The palace sits at the top of a steep 20 to 30-minute climb from the park entrance. The shuttle runs between the park gate and the palace (included with guided tours and select tickets). Non-negotiable in July heat, genuinely useful year-round if you'd rather arrive without sweating through your shirt.
Combos make the whole Sintra day better
Pena Palace + Quinta da Regaleira or Pena Palace + Moorish Castle are natural full-day pairings. Two hilltop giants, one booking, no separate queues.
The Lisbon Card combo is the move if you're day-tripping from Lisbon: palace entry plus unlimited public transport, sorted in one go.
Policies
Pena Palace tickets are non-refundable. No exceptions, no weather clauses. Sintra can be misty and unpredictable. Pick a day with a decent forecast and commit to it like a plan, not a maybe.
The palace has uneven cobblestones and steep ramps. The shuttle eliminates the uphill walk, and the palace has wheelchair-accessible routes and ramps.
The shuttle isn't optional in summer; it's a sanity decision. The walk from the park gate to the palace is 20 to 30 minutes of steep, cobbled uphill. If your ticket doesn't include the shuttle, check whether it can be added at the gate. Guided and thematic pena palace tours include it automatically, one less thing to figure out on arrival.
The Chalet of the Countess of Edla is chronically undervisited. Most people head straight for the palace and never make it to the western edge of the park. The Chalet, built by Ferdinand II for his second wife, is intimate, beautifully preserved, and almost always quiet. Your Pena Park ticket already covers it. Use it.
Photography inside the palace: no flash, no tripods. Handheld cameras and phones are fine throughout. Flash photography is prohibited inside the royal apartments, and tripods aren't permitted inside the palace building.
Drones are banned across the entire Pena Park estate. No exceptions. Leave the drone in Lisbon.
The Pena Palace map is your friend. Download it before you lose signal. The signal in the upper park can be patchy. The palace's mobile app has a downloadable map. Grab it before you head up.
Re-entry isn't permitted. Once you exit the palace building, you cannot go back in on the same ticket. Plan your interior visit as one continuous loop.
Frequently asked questions about Pena Palace tickets
You can buy directly through Headout. Buying online guarantees your time slot, skips the on-site queue, and in some cases unlocks skip-the-line access unavailable at the gate.
Yes, a limited number of walk-up tickets are sold at the gate. But in peak season (Jun to Sept), slots fill up hours in advance and queues to buy on-site can stretch 45 to 60 minutes. Booking ahead is strongly recommended.
The park-only ticket starts from €15. The palace + park ticket starts from €20. Guided tours, audio guide bundles, and combo tickets are priced higher. Check the comparison table above for the full breakdown by ticket type.
The standard palace + park ticket covers full access to the palace interiors, including the Arab Room, Kitchen, Noble Floor, and Great Hall, and the entire 200-hectare park. The park-only ticket excludes palace interiors. Guided tours include a shuttle transfer from the park gate to the palace.
Book online in advance, at least 1 to 2 weeks ahead in summer, earlier for guided and thematic tours. Online booking secures your time slot and, depending on the ticket type, gives you skip-the-line access unavailable at the gate.
If you want to understand what you're actually looking at, such as the Manueline symbolism, Ferdinand II's obsessions, the political story behind the 1910 exile. The guided tour covers what the audio guide summarises. The thematic tour goes further with live performance and small group tour.
It's an actor-led experience centered on Queen Amélia's life at Pena. Costumed performers recreate scenes from royal court life and take you through the private apartments. It includes shuttle transfer and runs with limited guests per session.
All Pena Palace tickets, entry, guided tours, thematic tours, and combos are non-refundable. There are no exceptions. Choose your date carefully and check the forecast; Sintra weather can be unpredictable.
Combos with Quinta da Regaleira and Moorish Castle are natural pairings that cover Sintra's hilltop highlights in a single day. Combo tickets are priced better than buying separately and remove the need to queue at two different ticket windows.
Pena Palace Restaurant inside the estate doesn't require advance booking for casual dining, but it gets busy during peak lunchtime hours (12:30–2:30pm). If you're planning a sit-down meal, arriving early or late avoids the rush.

What to expect at Pena Palace
1/6
Arriving at the hilltop
The palace doesn't ease you in—it ambushes you. Turrets in terracotta and mustard yellow rise above the treeline as you approach, and the closer you get, the less it looks like something that should exist in real life. This is Ferdinand II's doing, and he had opinions.
Stepping inside the palace
Walk through rooms that haven't changed since Queen Amélia packed her bags and fled into exile in 1910. The Noble Floor is essentially a royal time capsule, including King Carlos I's bedroom, the Queen's private boudoir, personal photographs still on the shelves. The silence in these rooms hits differently.
The New Palace
Built as a royal residence addition in the late 19th century, the New Palace houses the more intimate royal quarters including the Stag Room with its striking deer-antler décor, and a kitchen that looks like it was abandoned mid-dinner service. It's less theatrical than the Old Palace, but somehow more human.
The Arab Room
Of all the rooms inside, this one stops people mid-step. Moorish arches, geometric stucco work, and tilework so intricate it almost feels mathematically impossible. Ferdinand II was obsessed with Islamic art and this room is where that obsession peaks.
Into the 200-hectare park
Most visitors rush through the palace and barely touch the park, which is a mistake. The Valley of the Lakes, Queen's Fern Valley, and the Temple of Columns are all waiting, along with trails that wind through exotic plants sourced from five continents. Set aside at least 3 to 4 hours total.
Guided and audio-guided tours
A guided tour turns the palace's layered symbolism from "pretty and confusing" to genuinely fascinating. Thematic tours go even deeper and showcase the royal life, Romantic architecture, hidden Masonic details. The audio guide is a strong self-paced alternative if you'd rather wander freely.
Explore Pena Palace
1/12
Monumental Gate
This is where Pena stops being a silhouette on a hill and becomes something you have to reckon with. The gate flanked by towers and dripping with Manueline ornament is Ferdinand II's opening statement. It doesn't whisper.
Access: Included with all palace + park tickets
Triton's Terrace
A half-man, half-sea creature carved in raw limestone guards the archway leading into the palace. The Triton figure is so detailed with scales, expression, sheer scale that most visitors stop here longer than they planned.
Access: Included with all palace + park tickets
Courtyard of Arches
The junction between the medieval chapel and Ferdinand II's 19th-century additions. Moorish arches meet Gothic stonework here! Two very different centuries quietly coexisting in one courtyard.
Access: Included with all palace + park tickets
Manueline Cloister
Built around the ruins of a 16th-century monastery, the cloister is one of the palace's oldest surviving spaces. The azulejo tilework lining the walls is extraordinary with geometric patterns in deep blue and white that have barely aged in four centuries.
Access: Included only with the palace ticket
Kitchen
The royal kitchen looks like the staff stepped out mid-preparation and never came back. Copper pots, ceramic tiles, iron ranges, everything still in place exactly as it was when the royal family fled in 1910. Oddly, one of the most affecting rooms in the palace.
Access: Included with all palace + park tickets
Great Hall
The formal reception space of the palace, with high ceilings, ornate furnishings, and the kind of proportions that make it clear this was a room built for ceremony. It connects the private and public wings of the New Palace and anchors the whole floor.
Smoking Room
A richly decorated retreat designed for the king's private use. Dark wood paneling, intricate detailing, and an atmosphere that feels deliberately removed from the rest of the palace. One of those rooms that rewards a slow look around.
Access: Included only with the palace ticket
Bedroom of Ferdinand II
The King-Artist's private bedroom sits exactly as he left it. The room reflects his personality, which is romantic, eclectic, and layered with detail. Understanding who Ferdinand II was makes this room significantly more interesting than it first appears.
Access: Included only with the palace ticket
Dressing Room of Queen Amélia & The Tea Room
Two intimate spaces that together paint a portrait of Queen Amélia's daily life at Pena. The dressing room is personal and quietly elegant; the tea room is where royal domesticity felt, briefly, almost ordinary.
Access: Included only with the palace ticket
Private Apartments
The most intimate section of the palace. The rooms where the royal family actually lived, not performed. Personal objects, family photographs, and untouched furnishings make these quarters feel less like a monument and more like a home that time forgot.
Access: Included only with the palace ticket
Chalet and Garden of the Countess of Edla
Ferdinand II built this chalet for his morganatic wife, the Countess of Edla, and it couldn't be more different from the palace. It is intimate, Swiss-inspired, surrounded by a garden of camellias and ferns. It's the quietest, most unexpectedly charming corner of the entire estate.
Access: Included with all palace + park tickets
Valley of Lakes & Little Birds Fountain
Leave the palace terraces behind, and the park opens into something almost meditative. Still lakes, ancient trees from across five continents, and a decorative fountain tucked into the greenery. The Valley of Lakes is where Pena finally lets you breathe.
Palace: Open daily, 9:30am to 6:30pm (last entry 6pm)
Closed: 25 December and 1 January
Best time of day: Arrive right at 9:30am when the palace opens. The first hour is noticeably quieter before the mid-morning groups arrive.
Best time to year: Mar to May and Sept to Oct hit the sweet spot with mild weather, manageable crowds, and Sintra's forests at their most atmospheric. Jul and Aug are peak season; beautiful, but busy.
Park gate (Estrada da Pena) → All visitors with park or palace + park tickets → Primary entry point for the estate
Palace interior entrance → All visitors with Palace + Park tickets → Separate timed entry into the palace building → Skip-the-line holders use the priority lane here
Chalet of the Countess of Edla gate with park tickets → Follow signage from the main park paths
Ticket redemption: Show your e-ticket (QR code) at the gate for direct scanning. Guided tour guests should wait at the meeting point outside the palace store for their guide or actor host.
Security check: Bag checks are in place at the main gate. Arrive 10 to 15 minutes before your slot.
Shuttle bus: Runs from the main park gate to the palace entrance, a steep 20 to 30 minute uphill walk without it. Included with guided and thematic tours; available as an add-on with select tickets.
Toilets: Located near the main park entrance, at the palace interior entrance, and near the Chalet of the Countess of Edla.
Gift shop: Located near the palace exit. Stocks Pena-branded souvenirs, books, ceramics, and prints.
Lockers: Available near the main entrance for larger bags.
Wi-Fi: Available in select areas of the park and palace.
The shuttle bus between the park gate and palace removes the steepest part of the journey. Highly recommended for visitors with mobility concerns.
The palace interior has uneven cobbled surfaces, steep ramps, and narrow staircases in several sections.
The main terrace and ground floor of the palace are the most accessible areas inside the building.
Pena Park's lower trails near the Valley of Lakes are relatively flat and manageable; upper trails toward Cruz Alta are steep and uneven.
Visitors requiring specific accessibility assistance can request near the entrance.
Three dining options inside the estate mean you can fuel up at the start, refuel mid-visit, and reward yourself at the end.
Pena Palace Restaurant: Set inside the Room of Arches in the old palace stables, with windows that frame the park and palace like a painting. Sit-down Portuguese lunch with a view that most restaurants would kill for.
Open 10:30am–5:30pm Must-try: Bacalhau à Brás (Portuguese salt cod)
Palace Cafeteria: One floor above the restaurant and spilling onto one of the prettiest terraces on the estate. Coffee here hits differently when you're looking out over a UNESCO-listed hilltop.
Open 10am–6pm (last entry 5:45pm) Must-try: Pastel de nata with an espresso
Riding Ring Kiosk: The estate's grab-and-go — strategically placed at the park entrance for exactly the moment you realize you need a drink before tackling 200 hectares of hillside. mean Open 10am–6pm Must-try: Fresh juice before the uphill begins

Getting there
By train: Catch the Sintra Line from Lisboa Rossio or Lisboa Oriente. The journey takes around 40 minutes. From Sintra station, take Bus 434 (Scotturb) directly to the palace entrance.
By bus: Bus 434 runs a circular route: Sintra Station → National Palace of Sintra → Pena Palace → Moorish Castle → back to Sintra Station. Frequency is every 20 to 30 minutes.
By car: From Lisbon, take the A37 toward Sintra. Paid parking is available at the park entrance (Parque de Estacionamento da Pena) Approx. €3–4/hour.
By tuk-tuk or taxi: Available from Sintra town centre, a convenient option if you're skipping public transport.

I thought it was an absolutely incredible place, full of history and magic. I felt like I was in a medieval movie, and we kept wondering how the person who designed that place had such an incredible vision—creating things that are beyond imagination.

A wonderful visit that's well worth the trip. Our 5- and 7-year-old boys loved getting lost on the little paths, climbing the towers, and exploring the hidden staircases!

We had no trouble finding this wonderful building; we only had to wait three minutes, but it was well worth it. Inside, we saw furnishings that were just as beautiful as the building itself. I highly recommend it.

Yes, our whole family was very impressed with the variety of sea life. Some we had never seen before at other aquariums. Also a pretty location on the water.

My wife and I visited Portugal for the first time in April 2026. Our guided tour with a private company was canceled due to Good Friday services. We were so determined to visit Jeronimo's Monastery that we returned to Lisbon 6 days later and bought tickets through HeadOut! A major wishlist was checked off our Bucket List! Thanks for the memories!
