How many entrances are there at Pena Palace?

There are three access points in total at Pena Palace. Two gates into the Park of Pena, and one into the palace itself.

The main park entrance (Estrada da Pena) is where the vast majority of visitors, whether on timed tickets, fast-track passes, or guided tours begin their visit. The shuttle bus also runs from here up to the palace.

The lakes entrance (Lagoa do Cisne) is a secondary park gate on the western side, best suited for visitors hiking up from Sintra town or arriving from the Moorish Castle. It drops you into the park's scenic trail network, and from here it's roughly a 15-minute walk uphill to the palace.

Once inside the park and at the palace, the Monumental Gate is where your timed-entry slot gets you into the palace's interior visit circuit. The dramatic triumphal arch adorned with serpents and diamond-shaped reliefs, leading through a drawbridge tunnel to the upper patios.

We'll walk you through which entrance works best for your ticket type—read on.

Main park entrance (Estrada da Pena)

  • Location: Estrada da Pena, Sintra (base of the hill, near the shuttle bus stop)
  • How to spot: Main ticketing barriers with Parques de Sintra signage; shuttle bus queue on your left
  • Best for: All ticket types, this is where every Pena Palace entrance ticket gets scanned
  • Timings: Park opens 9am daily (palace from 9:30am); last entry 6pm (park)/5:30pm (palace)
  • Crowds & waits: Peak: 15 to 25 minutes | Shoulder: 5 to 10 minutes
  • Accessibility: Step-free access; accessible shuttle bus departs from here to the palace every 15 minutes
  • Parking/Drop-off: Bus 434 from Sintra station stops directly outside; taxi/Uber drop-off on Estrada da Pena
  • Pro tip: The pena palace shuttle bus runs from here up to the palace. Highly recommended if you want to save your legs for exploring, not the climb

Lakes entrance (Lagoa do Cisne)

  • Location: Western side of the Park of Pena, near the Lagoa do Cisne (Swan Lake)
  • How to spot: Smaller, quieter gate off the trail connecting Sintra town to the Moorish Castle
  • Best for: Hikers, trail walkers, and visitors combining Pena Park with the Moorish Castle on the same day; Pena Park entrance for the scenic route
  • Timings: Same as main park hours; opens 9am, last entry 6pm
  • Crowds & waits: Consistently light, one of the quietest ways into the park
  • Accessibility: Uneven forest trail approach; not recommended for wheelchair users or strollers
  • Parking/Drop-off: No direct bus stop; best reached on foot from Sintra town (40-minute uphill) or from Moorish Castle
  • Highlights nearby: Swan Lake, woodland trails, quieter park paths before reaching the palace
  • Pro tip: Valid Pena Palace entrance tickets are still required here. You can't walk in for free just because it's the back gate

Monumental Gate (palace interior entry)

  • Location: At the palace itself, atop the hill inside the Park of Pena
  • How to spot: Unmistakable triumphal arch covered in interlocking serpents and diamond-shaped reliefs; drawbridge leads through a tunnel to the upper patios
  • Best for: All visitors with a Park + Palace ticket; this is your checkpoint into the palace interiors
  • Timings: Palace entry 9:30am to 5:30pm (last entry)
  • Crowds & waits: Peak: 10–20 minutes | Shoulder: 5 minutes | Fast-track holders use a dedicated lane with near-zero wait
  • Accessibility: Stepped tunnel entry through the gate; wheelchair users should follow the alternative accessible route signposted from the shuttle drop-off point
  • Highlights nearby: Queen's Terrace, Arab Room, Royal Apartments, all immediately accessible once through the gate
  • Pro tip: Your Pena Palace entrance ticket has a fixed time slot at this gate. Don't linger too long in the park on the way up, or you'll miss your window
Skip the queue, not the experience

The line at the Monumental Gate moves fast but only if you've got the right ticket. A skip-the-line Pena Palace entrance ticket gets you a dedicated fast-track lane, a fixed time slot, and no awkward shuffling behind a 40-person tour group wondering if you're in the right place.

Accessible entrances at Pena Palace

The main park entrance on Estrada da Pena is the only fully accessible entry point into the park and it's where your journey should begin. The entrance barrier is step-free, and from here, the Pena Palace shuttle bus runs up to the palace every 15 minutes, saving wheelchair users and visitors with limited mobility the steep 30-minute uphill walk through the park.

At the palace level, the Monumental Gate has a stepped tunnel as its primary passage, not suitable for wheelchairs. However, an alternative accessible route is clearly signposted from the shuttle drop-off point, bypassing the tunnel and leading directly into the palace visit circuit.

Inside the palace, some areas have uneven historic flooring and stairs that are part of the original structure—full wheelchair access to every room isn't guaranteed, but the main visit circuit is largely navigable. Tactile paving and accessible signage are available at key points throughout.

A few things to note:

  • The Lakes entrance is not accessible, the trail approach is unpaved and uneven
  • Wheelchairs are available on-site (subject to availability)
  • Visitors with a disability certificate may be entitled to a reduced Pena Palace entrance fee. Check the official website for eligibility
  • One accompanying companion may also qualify for a discounted or free ticket depending on the disability classification

Security, bags & re-entry

Unlike major city museums, there's no airport-style security screening at the Pena Palace entrance, but there are a few practical rules to know before you arrive.

  • Bag size: Large backpacks and oversized luggage are not permitted inside the palace interiors. Leave bulky bags at your accommodation or use the cloakroom near the palace
  • Prohibited items: Tripods, selfie sticks, and food/drinks are not allowed inside the palace rooms
  • Photography: Permitted throughout the park and palace exterior; some interior rooms restrict flash photography
  • Re-entry: Once you exit through the Monumental Gate after your palace visit, re-entry is not permitted on the same ticket
  • Park re-entry: Similarly, exiting the park and returning on the same Pena park entrance ticket is not allowed, so don't head out for lunch mid-visit expecting to come back in
  • Lockers: No dedicated lockers at the Pena Palace entrance gate; the cloakroom near the palace store can hold smaller items

A brief history of Pena Palace entrance

When King Ferdinand II decided to turn a crumbling hilltop monastery into his dream palace in the 1840s, he wasn't exactly planning for selfie queues and tour buses. Access was strictly royal-only, and the Monumental Gate, that dramatic arch dripping with carved serpents and diamond reliefs, was built as a statement piece, not a public thoroughfare. You entered only if you were invited.

That all changed in 1910 when the Portuguese monarchy collapsed, and the palace was handed over to the state. Suddenly, the hilltop retreat that had been off-limits for decades was open to everyone, and the main entrance gradually became the official front door for the public. As hiking culture grew and Sintra's trail network expanded, the Lakes entrance was opened on the western side, giving walkers a quieter, more scenic way in.
